There are many diets out there are safe and effective. Any low calorie diet will usually do. Just make sure you eat healthy, regularly, and keep those calories down.

As far as exercise goes, make sure you are combining weight training with cardio. Weight train to build muscle (which will help you burn more calories at rest and increase your metabolism), and cardio to help you burn instant calories.

Just make sure you stay away from diet pills, over training, undertraining, not eating, etc.
